Slow Food Tomato Fest 2009 - Thanks to Anonymous David!

This looks delightful.  Calling out to all my Chicago friends and family.  Please check this out!  I am so jealous.  Thanks David for pointing this out.  Maybe next year....sigh.

I went with my out-of-town guest and it was really, really neat. Everyone brought tomatoes from their garden and put them on a big round table. There must have been at least 10 or 15 varieties and a total of 100-200 tomatoes. We also each brought a dish for the potluck and there was not a bad taste in the lot. Best of all, we were surrounded by the Honey Co-op gardens and beehives. They are growing winter squash in mounds of dirt that are sitting on top of concrete!

Eric and I went to the Tomato Fest in NOLA when we were there in June. It was 106 degrees that day and I don't think we ate anything that had tomatos in it. Hrmmmm...perhaps we should check out this one. We have a few days left.

I forgot the coolest part: one of the organizers of Slow Food Chicago and the Tomato Fest is a guy about my age named Tom Casten. We were chatting and admiring the tomato table and I mentioned that my tomato plants came from a sale held at Garfield Park Conservatory as a benefit for the Honey Co-op. He got a big smile on his face and said proudly, "I raised all those little plants from seed!" He was a like a grandpa beaming down on his progeny. And in a sense, that's exactly what they were, those cute little tomatoes. Apparently every year he plants 800 seeds and nurtures them into seedlings, then into plants. He invites a lot of his friends over for the initial seed-planting and makes a party of it. I loved that he shared this story, and what a connection, huh? From his hands to my garden, and then back again to him.
